Privacy notice
Last updated 23 October 2026Who we are
Lateral Intelligence (lateralintelligence.ai) is run by PJ Consulting Group Ltd, company number [to confirm], registered office [to confirm]. We decide how your information is used, so we are the controller of it under UK data protection law. Our registration with the Information Commissioner's Office is [to confirm]. For anything about your information, email [to confirm].
What we hold about you, and why
| Information | Why we hold it | Our lawful basis |
|---|---|---|
| Your email address | To sign you in (by an emailed link; there is no password) and to run your account | Providing the service you signed up for (contract) |
| Your practices, PQE, and, if you give them, your name and firm | To show you the news, moves, pay rows and events for your practices | Contract |
| Your two permissions, each with the time you set it, the browser you used, and a scrambled (hashed) form of your internet address | To keep a record of what you agreed to and when, which we must be able to show | Legal obligation and legitimate interests (keeping proof of consent) |
| Weekly brief emails: which week, which items, whether it was sent | To send the brief only if you asked for it, and never twice in a week | Your consent |
| Consultation requests: the name you give, your practice, PQE, topics, the time you chose, your note, and when you confirmed the request | To arrange and hold the call you asked for | Contract, and your consent for any contact beyond that call |
| Career chat conversations | To answer your questions and let you return to them | Contract |
| When you last used the site | To count active members (no tracking tools are used) | Legitimate interests (running and improving the service) |
Your two permissions
When you join you choose, separately, whether to give each of these. Both start unticked, the site works with neither, and you can change either at any time in your settings in one click:
- “Send me the weekly brief for my practices.” Every brief email also has a one-click unsubscribe.
- “A Lateral Intelligence specialist may contact me individually about relevant opportunities.” This means a specialist may get in touch about your next move. Nothing about you is ever shared with a law firm unless you agree it with us, firm by firm.
Booking a consultation does not change either permission. The booking form has its own sentence, which covers contact about that consultation only.
Salary figures you submit
Salary figures you add to the PQE table are stored with no name, email, firm, account link or internet address, so they cannot be traced back to you. They are only ever shown as part of a group of five or more. To stop the same person submitting more than once every 90 days, we keep a scrambled form of your account number and the week of your last submission, with no figures.
The career chat
The career chat is an AI assistant. Your questions and its answers are processed by our AI provider, Anthropic, to produce each answer, and are kept for 30 days so you can return to them, then deleted. You can delete them sooner in the chat or in your settings. An adviser sees a conversation only if you tick “Share this chat with my adviser” when booking a consultation; a shared conversation is kept while that consultation is open. If you mark an answer as not helpful and send it to us, that question and answer, with any note you add, are shared with our team so we can improve the chat; we keep it until we have reviewed it, and no longer than 90 days. Marking an answer as helpful is only counted. The chat is not used to make decisions about you. Under its business terms, Anthropic does not use API conversations to train its models [to confirm].
Who else handles your information
These companies process information for us, under contracts that require them to protect it and use it only for us:
- Supabase: our database and sign-in, hosted in London.
- Vercel: hosts the website.
- Resend: sends sign-in links and the weekly brief.
- Anthropic: the AI that tags news and drafts the weekly brief from our sourced items (no personal information involved) and answers career chat questions.
- GitHub: runs our scheduled tasks: the daily news update, which also deletes chat conversations older than 30 days, and the weekly brief, which uses the email address and practices of members who asked for it.
Some of these companies are based in the United States. Where your information leaves the UK, it is protected by the UK's approved safeguards (the International Data Transfer Addendum or an adequacy decision) [to confirm for each provider]. We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with law firms without your agreement.
How long we keep it
- Your account, practices and permissions: until you delete your account.
- Career chat conversations: 30 days, or until you delete them. An answer you send us as not helpful: until reviewed, at most 90 days.
- Consultation requests: until you delete your account [to confirm a fixed period].
- Accounts not used for a long time: [to confirm].
Deleting your account in your settings removes your account, practices, permissions, consultation requests, chat conversations and email records straight away. Salary figures you submitted stay in the table, because nothing links them to you.
Lawyers named in our news
Our news and lateral moves name senior lawyers (partners, counsel, legal directors and heads of practice) when published sources report a move. These are public professional facts, each linked to its source and confirmed by two independent sources (or one source and the SRA register). We never name associates. If you are named and want to ask about it or object, email[to confirm].
Cookies
We use only the cookies needed to keep you signed in. We use no advertising, analytics or tracking cookies, so we do not ask for cookie consent.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of your information, ask us to correct it, delete it, restrict or object to how we use it, or move it elsewhere, and you can withdraw either permission at any time. Email [to confirm]. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes
If we change how we use your information, we will update this notice and tell members by email before the change takes effect.
